FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis on Monday, September 7, 2020 toured the renovated FBO private airport in Grand Bahama that is temporarily being used to accommodate all flights in and out of the island until repairs and reconstruction of both the international and domestic sections of Grand Bahama’s International Airport have been made and the facility reopens.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Hon. Peter Turnquest, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, MP for East Grand Bahama; the Hon. Kwasi Thompson, Minister of State for Grand Bahama in the Office of the Prime Minister; and the Hon. Iram Lewis, Minister of State for Disaster Preparedness, Management and Reconstruction, MP for Central Grand Bahama.
Freeport Airport facilities were severely damaged during the first week of September 2019 when Hurricane Dorian rampaged across Grand Bahama and Abaco, causing widespread destruction to these two northern Bahamian islands.
Prime Minister Minnis said during Monday’s press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister in Freeport that talks between the owners of Grand Bahama International Airport – Hutchison Group and the Grand Bahama Port Authority – and the Government of The Bahamas are on-going and that the Government is hopeful that those talks will end with Grand Bahama eventually having a first-class international and domestic airport.
The Prime Minister Minnis also announced that charter and domestic flights will be allowed to resume as more restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic are lifted.
