KINGSTON, Jamaica  — While in Jamaica for the CARIFTA Games, Prime Minister Philip “Brave” Davis met with President Paul Kagame of Rwanda, who was on a three-day state visit to Jamaica.

Revealing this in a tweet that accompanied a photo of the two leaders during their meeting, Prime Minister Davis said, “The Caribbean and Africa must continue to deepen their ties as regions. I look forward to meeting my other counterparts at CHOGM in Rwanda.”

The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) will take place during the week June 20, 2022, in Kigali, Rwanda.

“Commonwealth leaders will travel to Rwanda to reaffirm their common values and agree actions and policies to improve the lives of all their citizens,” CHOGM notes on its website.

CHOGM was due to take place in June 2020 but was postponed twice due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Following his State Visit to Jamaica,  Kagame visited Barbados, where he paid a courtesy call on Her Excellency Sandra Mason, President of Barbados, on April 16, and later met Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley. The leaders signed an agreement aimed at strengthening cooperation between Rwanda and Barbados.

Additionally, Barbados’ “relationship with Rwanda was memorialised with the planting of pink and yellow Acacia trees in the National Botanical Gardens by Prime Minister Mottley and President Kagame Saturday afternoon, April 16, according to an article in Barbados Today.

“During the tree planting ceremony, Mottley explained that the garden allowed those who visited to plant a tree and leave a lasting memory of their visit and provide the young constituents of Barbados the opportunity to learn more about the island’s biodiversity,” Barbados Today reported. “The Prime Minister further noted that she hoped the planting of trees would inspire the future of Barbados.”
