NASSAU, Bahamas — Commonwealth Secretary-General, Baroness Patricia Scotland, QC, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister the Most Hon. Dr. Hubert A. Minnis on Monday, October 7, 2019 and assured him of the Commonwealth’s commitment to play a role in the rebuilding of Abaco and Grand Bahama in the wake of Hurricane Dorian.
Accompanied by the Hon. Darren A. Henfield, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for North Abaco, the Secretary-General visited Abaco on Sunday, October 6, and said she was humbled by the devastation of homes and lives on the island, and the evidence of resilience.
“There is a lot for us to do,” she said. “We can do this because we are determined to work together.”
Prime Minister Minnis and the Secretary-General discussed the climate change crisis and how The Bahamas and other small island developing states (SIDS) may be able to access climate financing.
The Prime Minister thanked Secretary-General Scotland for recognizing the challenges faced by The Bahamas and for the Commonwealth’s support and commitment to help Abaco and Grand Bahama rebuild.
