NASSAU, Bahamas — More Bahamians are finding it difficult to afford a hot meal, with the Bahamas Red Cross Society reporting an 18.1 percent increase in the number of people seeking food assistance from the organization, the Nassau Guardian reported October 25.
Head of the Bahamas Red Cross Welfare Department Brendalee Rolle told Guardian Business yesterday that during the period of October 2016 to September 2017, the organization serviced on average 100 persons a month with its Meals on Wheels program, with the maximum number of persons receiving assistance during any given month reaching 105 persons.
That’s compared to the 112 persons on average per month during October 2017 and September 2018, during which the maximum number of persons receiving assistance per month increased to 126.
“To put this in greater prospective, for the period of October 2016 to September 2017, The Bahamas Red Cross provided approximately 28,800 meals to persons through the Meals on Wheels program, while for the period of October 2017 to September 2018, the Bahamas Red Cross provided approximately 32,256 meals to persons through the Meals on Wheels program,” Rolle said. https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/10/25/red-cross-reports-increase-in-people-seeking-food-assistance/
