(EDITOR’S NOTE: My beloved Washington Nationals began its campaign to repeat as World Series Champions on Saturday night with a 9-2 victory over the New York Yankees, after losing the 2020 season opener to the Yankees 4-1 Thursday night in a game that was stopped by rain in the top of the sixth inning, but was declared an official game because five full innings had been completed. With 58 games remaining in this revised 60-game 2020 Major League Baseball season, there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that my beloved Nationals will repeat as World Series Champions. Below is a report on Saturday night’s game posted on the Nationals website.)
WASHINGTON, D.C., July 26 — The Nationals are no strangers to home runs clanging off the foul pole. Following up Howie Kendrick’s historic shot to right field in the World Series, Victor Robles went yard off the left-field pole on Saturday in the Nats’ second game of the 2020 season, a 9-2 victory over the Yankees.
The center fielder powered a fastball from right-hander Michael King 366 feet for his first homer of the year. Robles went 3-for-4 on the night, and he was a triple shy of the cycle.
With four RBIs on Saturday, he already topped last season’s mark of three RBIs in a single game. Robles’ career high is five RBIs, reached on Sept. 26, 2018.
Asdrúbal Cabrera also finished a triple shy of the cycle, connecting on a two-run homer in the seventh inning. In the eighth, Michael A. Taylor hit the Nationals’ third home run of the game, crushing a solo shot to deep left-center field as Washington piled on.
This three-game series wraps up Sunday, with lefty Patrick Corbin scheduled to take the mound for the Nats at 1:05 p.m. ET (watch on MLB.TV).
