FREEPORT, Grand Bahama, November 2, 2019 – Continuing their exemplary commitment to Rotary International’s motto, “Service Above Self,” the Rotary Clubs of Grand Bahama have donated roofing supplies to residents in Freetown, East Grand Bahama, one of the areas most severely devastated when Hurricane Dorian slammed into Grand Bahama and Abaco the first week of September.
Freetown is in the constituency of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance K. Peter Turnquest, a Past-President of the Rotary Club of Lucaya, and he was among those who delivered the supplies to Freetown on Friday, November 1.
Ray Williams, Governor of Rotary District 6990, and Tom Powers, Rotary Area Governor for Fort Lauderdale, Florida, were also in the Rotary group that delivered the materials, which were purchased from Gold Rock, a building supplies facility in Freeport.
The Rotary Clubs of District 6990 “have served the diverse regions of Southeast Florida, the Florida Keys and the Grand Bahama Island community since the chartering of the Rotary Club of Key West in 1916,” according to Rotary District 6990 website.
“In 1970, Grand Bahama Island became part of the district by a Rotary International Presidential decision,” the website notes. “As part of the largest international service organization in the world, Rotarians specialize in providing humanitarian services to our neighborhoods, our youth, our members’ vocations and to the world we live in. District 6990 is a tropical paradise, home to approximately 2,000 Rotarians and over 50 clubs.”
The current Area Governor for Grand Bahama is Lisbeth Maigaard Knowles, a Past-President of the Rotary Club of Lucaya.
