WASHINGTON, D.C., October 25, 2019 — As my beloved Washington Nationals continues its quest this evening towards becoming baseball’s 2019 World Series Champions, I am as excited as a little boy on Christmas Eve night waiting with bubbling anticipation for the gifts he will receive from Santa Claus.
Even the political drama that’s currently ongoing in this city, where politics is “serious business,” is being overshadowed by the Nationals amazing performance so far in the World Series, returning home after winning the first two games against the Houston Astros in Houston.
To put what’s currently unfolding in this city in perspective, the last time a Washington team played in the Fall Classic was 1933 during the Great Depression and President Franklin D. Roosevelt threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 3, according to an article in the Washington Post.
“Local excitement was sky-high in 1933,” the Post’s article notes. “At least two Senate hearings were postponed so senators and witnesses could attend the games, which were all played during the day. A local radio station arranged for a dozen men on death row at the D.C. jail to hear the games on the radio. The Gayety Theater announced a special burlesque show ‘The Pennant Winners,’ featuring ‘the Ladies of the Night’ ballet “dancers.’ ”
Anibal Sanchez will take the mound for the Nationals tonight and he will be seeking to duplicate the excellent pitching performances by Max Scherzer and Stephen Strasburg in games one and two, respectively. LET’S GO NATS.
