NASSAU, Bahamas, August 16, 2021 – Shaun Miller Sr. spoke on behalf of the family at the “special private reception” hosted by PLP Leader Philip “Brave” Davis honouring his daughter Shaunae Miller-Uibo and fellow Olympic Games hero Steven Gardiner at Margaritaville at the Pointe.

According to Anthon Thompson, who posted a series of sensational photos he took at the reception on Facebook, “Mr. Miller gave very sage counsel and love to his daughter.”

Assuming that Mr. Davis will be the next  Prime Minister, Mr. Thompson said Mr. Miller likewise gave very strong encouragement to Hon. Phillip “Brave” Davis, Leader of Opposition Progressive Liberal Party, “to ensure sports development, support for all athletes, professional or not, — in-particular athletes who come from struggling families — and that facilities are made available through a comprehensive sports development program.”

Mr. Thompson noted that Mr. Davis has been and is “very much in focus” with the need for improved sports development and has “promised to bridge the gaps when he forms the new government, shortly!!!”

As I noted in a previous article, with a total population of slightly less than 400,000, globally The Bahamas is a tiny nation in every sense of the word, but at the Tokyo Olympic Games, The Bahamas again demonstrated that it is also one of the world’s “superpowers” in sports, winning gold medals in both the men’s and the women’s 400 metres.

On Friday, August 6, Shaunae Miller-Uibo won the women’s 400 meters, running a personal best (48.36) and defending her gold medal from the 2016 Rio Games. She becomes just the second woman in Olympic history to win back-to-back titles in the 400 meters, after Marie-Jose Perec, the 1992 and 1996 champion.

A day earlier, Steven Gardiner lifted the spirits of the entire nation, winning gold for The Bahamas in the men’s 400 metres.

Since they returned to The Bahamas on Thursday, April 12, the two Bahamian Olympic heroes have been showered with accolades and gifts.
