FREEPORT, Bahama, April 11, 2024 — Chief Executive Officer of the Grand Bahama Shipyard, David Skentelbery recently gave an update on the $500 million expansion project underway at the shipyard, ZNS Northern Service reported yesterday.
The project is on time although there are some changes in the way we’re doing things to complete them,” Skentelbery said. “I think this week they’ll actually start cutting steel on the new docks in China. So, everything is on time and already in the yard we’ve started the extension of the piers so far so good.”
Noting that upon completion the new docks will be able to cater to the world’s largest ships in need of repair, Skentelbery added, “One will be capable of lifting 93,000 tons to put that into perspective that’s capable of probably lifting in excess of ninety percent of the world’s cruise ship fleet. The larger dock which will arrive later on is 2026 will lift 130,000 tons and will take not only the largest cruise ships afloat today but those that are currently planned.”
According to Skentelbury, the biggest of the two docks will probably be the largest in the world.
