WASHINGTON, D.C., May 22, 2019 – Fifth grade students from Noyes Elementary School in Northeast D.C. concluded the school year with a visit to The Bahamas Embassy Consular Annex, 1025 Vermont Avenue, N.W., to make a presentation and pay a courtesy call on His Excellency Sidney Collie, Bahamas Ambassador to the United States and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), and Mr. Theo Neilly, Bahamas Consul General to the United States.
The presentation by the students was an impressive showcase of Bahamian culture, as they performed Bahamian dance, the national anthem in sign language, and recited facts they learned about The Bahamas from the staff of the Embassy Consular Annex during the Embassy Adoption Program. After the presentation, students were treated to a “true Bahamian” feast of crack conch, peas n’ rice, plantain, macaroni (Bahamian style), guava duff and coconut tart.
The Embassy Adoption Program, in partnership with Washington Performing Arts, embodies the spirit of cultural diplomacy through elementary education. The program is an academic year global education program that affords fifth and sixth-grade students the unique opportunity to expand their global awareness through direct interactions with diplomats from around the world.
On its Facebook page, the Embassy Consular Annex noted that it “is very appreciative to have had the opportunity to work with such a wonderful and talented group of students and their dedicated teacher, Ms. Aisha Randal.”
It added, “Many thanks to Lydia Minnis, attaché, and Felipe Major, office assistant, for doing such an amazing job educating the students during the year on all things Bahamian.”
