NASSAU, Bahamas, March 5, 2024 — In an exemplary display of partnership and community service, The Bahamas Red Cross Society, serving in its auxiliary role to the Government of The Bahamas, successfully convened with the Ministry of Social  Services, Information and Broadcasting. This significant meeting, led by the Edison L. Sumner, President of The Bahamas Red Cross Society, and Minister Myles Laroda, Minister of Social Services, Information and Broadcasting, was a testament to the ongoing commitment and reaffirmation to enhance the humanitarian  work that serves as the bedrock of social welfare in the nation.

The auxiliary status of The Bahamas Red Cross Society signifies a unique partnership with the government, enabling the society to support the public authorities in their humanitarian tasks. As an auxiliary, the Society provides invaluable assistance and expertise in disaster management, including preparedness,  response and recovery, health, and social services, complementing the government’s efforts to safeguard  the well-being of its citizens.

During the meeting, President Sumner and Minister Laroda engaged in strategic discussions to build upon  and fortify the working relationship that has been instrumental in delivering humanitarian aid and  services. They recognized the importance of streamlining efforts to ensure a swift and coordinated  response to humanitarian challenges, thus maximizing the impact of their services among the  communities they serve, particularly in times of crisis or natural disasters.

The meeting was also attended by Kim Thurston, 1st Vice President; Alicia Pinder, Director General; Peatra  Jones, Secretary; and Valerie McKenzie, Manager – Welfare Services from The Bahamas Red Cross Society.

From the Ministry, Phaedra Rahming-Turnquest, Permanent Secretary, and Charlamae Fernander, Acting  Director – Department of Social Services, offered their valuable insights and support.

The auxiliary role of The Bahamas Red Cross Society was a focal point of the dialogue, with discussions on  how to enhance resource mobilization, first aid training, disaster preparedness and response, blood  donation drives, and support for the vulnerable sectors of the population and the development of  programs that align with the national strategies for social services. By reinforcing this auxiliary position,  The Bahamas Red Cross Society reinforces its commitment to work together with the government to  provide a holistic approach to disaster management and social welfare.

This meeting underscored the importance of the Society’s auxiliary role and the shared dedication of both  organizations to continue supporting each other in their humanitarian work.
