GUEST COMMENTARY: BY FRED MOSS
EIGHT MILE ROCK, Grand Bahama — Call the Fire Engine! Eight Mile Rock is on fire! On Thursday, June 30, 2022, the Hon Ginger Moxey, Minister for Grand Bahama, kicked off the celebrations for the 49th anniversary of Bahamian independence.
The front street, Bayside Road, was lit. Hundreds, if not thousands, of Bahamians and tourists filled the area commonly called “Eight Mile Rock Fish Fry.”
To me, the scene was reminiscent of Boxing Day morning on Bay Street. The local food and beverage vendors from the area were showing nothing but teeth. One of the food vendors from Andros Town had to replenish their fare of cracked lobster, conch, fried snapper, barracuda, conch salad, conch fritters, crab and rice three times before 9:00 p.m.
As one Food Vendor shouted, “Christmas come early.” From 6:00- 9:00 p.m., the Conch Juice Band had those of us from the Grey Hair Club trying to shake a tail feather with nothing but pure Bahamian music from back in the day.
At 9:15 p.m., the down home gal, Ginger Moxey, took to the streets. The only thing left to say was “They Coming!” If I did not know better, it was easy to assume that she was one of the lead dancers for the Valley Boys or the Saxons.
Ginger Moxey is one of the modern-day politicians who has that “common touch”, reminiscent of Sir Lynden Pindling and A.D.Hanna. Regardless of your station in life or who you are, Minister Moxey is not too big to return your phone call or sit on your floor and take time to listen to your concerns.
As I reflect on what the Eight Mile Rock Fish Fry area looked like before the Beautiful Grand Bahama clean-up project, one can only say, “Thank God for Ginger Moxey, Thank God for the PLP.
With the PLP, it has always been, “People First.” For what it’s worth.
