NASSAU, Bahamas — Tourism Minister Dionisio D’Aguilar yesterday branded assertions that the government “buckled under pressure” from “affluent, monied people” when it decided to reverse amendments to the Real Property Tax Act as “absolute rubbish” and dismissed claims that the Minnis administration was catering to the rich.
The government announced it would review the changes made to that act, which would have resulted in increased taxes on properties not occupied for at least six months, after Lyford Cay Property Owners Association (LCPOA) Chairman Henry Cabot Lodge III wrote to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Peter Turnquest on July 30, 2018, warning that the changes would cause some Lyford Cay residents to leave The Bahamas. https://thenassauguardian.com/2018/08/11/tourism-minister-govt-didnt-buckle-to-lyford-cay/
