U.S. EMBASSY NASSAU EXPRESSES CONDOLENCES TO THE FAMILY OF SIR CHARLES CARTER

Sir Charles Carter died on on Saturday, May 15.

NASSAU, Bahamas, May 18, 2021 — On behalf of the United States Embassy in Nassau, we wish to express our sincerest condolences to Lady Carter, the family and friends of Sir Edward Charles Carter. As the nation mourns, we too will miss his familiar voice, broadcast throughout the country by radio and television for over half a century.

As a visionary and leader in the broadcasting and entertainment industry, Sir Charles made enormous contributions to the national development of The Bahamas. Sir Charles was a stalwart supporter of Bahamian culture and music, and the highest standards of journalism throughout his media career. Sir Charles was an impassioned advocate for Bahamian artists, and his life’s work is a testament to his passion for preserving the rich legacy of Bahamian music and culture for future generations.

The U.S. Embassy enjoyed a wonderful and impactful friendship with Sir Charles, and he often invited us to work with his platforms to promote the strong U.S.-Bahamas relationship on several of his morning radio shows, with topics ranging from consular services to U.S. higher education opportunities, to discussions about inclusion and diversity.

It was a special treat to air his shows live from the Ambassador’s Residence for so many years during our annual Fourth of July celebrations, giving us the opportunity to discuss our shared democratic values, which make the U.S.-Bahamas partnership so strong. We extend the most sincere sympathy to Sir Charles’ family at this difficult time, and to the people of The Bahamas who also mourn his loss.

May he rest in peace.

(EDITOR’S NOTE: I want to personally thank Chargé d’Affaires Usha Pitts at the U.S. Embassy Nassau and the staff at the Embassy for this wonderful tribute to my very dear friend from boyhood days, Sir Charles Carter. Since Ms. Pitts began her tour at the U.S. Embassy Nassau on New Year’s Day, 2021, she has certainly demonstrated that she is a consummate diplomat, which is not surprising given the fact that in the past, she served at diplomatic posts in Russia, Cuba, Italy, Austria, Panama, and Brazil. She has also served in Washington, D.C. and New York City.)
