FREEPORT, Grand Bahama – Sept.11, 2024 — Lucaya Service Company Limited (LUSCO) and Tamarind Development Company Limited (Tamarind Development) are pleased to provide an important update on the ongoing restoration efforts for the Taino Bridge. As shared custodians of the bridge’s maintenance, both companies have been working diligently to ensure this essential infrastructure’s safe and timely rehabilitation.
The Taino Bridge serves as a critical crossing point for pedestrians and vehicles while housing key utilities, including water mains for Grand Bahama Utility Company Limited and Tamarind Development and electrical conduits for Grand Bahama Power Company Limited. These utilities are vital to the residents and businesses south of the bridge, making the restoration project a top priority.
PROJECT PROGRESS
Infrastructure projects of this scope require significant lead time for planning and preparation. Key steps already completed include the design phase, led by Integrated Building Services Limited, an engineering firm tasked with developing the bridge deck reconstruction plans, preparing bid documents, and overseeing the bidding process. After a thorough review, Bahamas Hot Mix (BHM) was selected as the contractor for the bridge’s reconstruction. BHM is a well-regarded leader in infrastructure projects and is recognized for its expertise in complex undertakings like the restoration of the Taino Bridge.
Before the reconstruction can begin, however, it is necessary to relocate the utilities currently situated in the bridge’s central median. This is essential to minimize disruption to water and power services. Over the past month, LUSCO has engaged in detailed discussions with the utility providers to establish a safe and effective methodology for the relocation. Once this is finalized, the construction contract will be awarded, and work will commence.
ENSURING PUBLIC SAFETY AND MINIMAL DISRUPTION
During construction, LUSCO and Tamarind Development are committed to maintaining utility services and safe access for both pedestrians and vehicles on portions of the bridge. To accommodate marine traffic, a mariners’ notice has been issued, advising boaters to use alternative routes such as the Fortune Bay Canal, Bell Channel Bay Canal, and the island’s south shore for east-west navigation. The tonnage limits for the bridge have also been reduced to enhance safety during the interim period.
Weekly inspections by a team comprised of LUSCO, the GBPA Building and Development Services Department, and the Project Engineer, are conducted to monitor the bridge’s condition and address any emerging concerns. These proactive measures ensure the continued safety of all bridge users.
We understand that the preparatory work that is currently taking place may raise concerns for the public, but we assure the community that LUSCO remains fully committed to maintaining the bridge in a safe and reliable condition. While we understand the inconvenience caused by the current closure of the western lanes, our teams are focused on delivering a successful restoration project that will enhance the long-term safety and functionality of this critical piece of infrastructure.
LUSCO and Tamarind Development will continue to keep all stakeholders, including residents and businesses, updated on progress and any potential impacts. Residents are welcome to contact us at 350-9016 with any questions or concerns related to the Taino Bridge.
