WASHINGTON, D.C., October 28, 2023 – I absolutely had to share this wonderful news posted on Facebook by Amber Turner, who is clearly a gifted and talented young Bahamian, with readers of my online publication, BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among the Bahamian diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

Amber happens to be the granddaughter of the late George A. Smith, who had a distinguished political career as a member of the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), prior to his death earlier this year in May. As I noted on numerous occasions in articles I have written, George was one of my best friends, and I am the godfather of Amber’s mother, Gina Smith-Turner.

So, you know that I am immensely of Amber’s accomplishments as noted in the narrative that accompanied the group of photos she posted on Facebook. Under the heading, A LITTLE LIFE UPDATE, here’s what Amber wrote:

“Recently, I had the incredible opportunity to attend Middle East and North Africa Climate Week in Saudi Arabia, followed by the inspiring Caribbean Regional Conference of Youth 2023 in Barbados

On top of that, I was honored to be a part of the 2023 National Youth Awards, where I won both the award for Youth in the Environment and the Prime Minister’s Cup. 🏆💚

I’m feeling truly blessed for the opportunities that have come my way and excited for the blessings yet to unfold.”

Amber ended her comments with this quote: “The weighty discourse on which our future depends can no longer rest solely in the hands of our leaders, for we are not only victims of climate change, but we are agents of change through activism, education, and science.” – Amber Turner, Miss Sustainability 🌱

EDITOR’S NOTE: Amber Turner, who is from Freeport, Grand Bahama, but lives in Nassau, studied at The University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, and the University of The Bahamas. As she navigates her way through her life’s journey, clearly Amber has an extremely bright future, which I hope includes following in her grandfather’s footsteps by making noteworthy contributions in the political arena.
