BAHAMAS HIGH COMMISSIONER ALVIN A. SMITH APPOINTED DEAN OF THE CARICOM GROUP TO CANADA

His Excellency Alvin A. Smith, Bahamas High Commissioner to Canada

OTTAWA, Canada, September 19, 2020 — The Bahamas High Commission is pleased to announce that His Excellency Alvin A. Smith, High Commissioner of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas to Canada, was recently appointed as Dean of the CARICOM Group to Canada with immediate effect. High Commissioner Smith replaces His Excellency Frantz Liautaud, former Ambassador of the Republic of Haiti.

A former Speaker of The House of Assembly in The Bahamas, Mr. Smith entered politics in 1992 as a member of the Free National Movement (FNM)  and served as Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry of Education in 1995 and again in 2001. In 1997 he was elected to the House of Assembly as MP for the Consistency of North Eleuthera.

In May 2002, Mr. Smith was re-elected as MP for North Eleuthera, and from May of 2002 to November of 2005 served as Official Leader of the FNM in Parliament. Following the national elections in May 2007, Mr. Smith was appointed as Speaker of the House of Assembly in the new FNM-led Government from 2007 to 2012 when the FNM was defeated in the  general elections  held in the Bahamas on May 7, 2012.

After the FNM returned to power as the Government of The Bahamas on May 10, 2017, Mr. Smith was appointed The Bahamas’ High Commissioner to Canada.
