WASHINGTON, D.C. —  Mr. Stephen Bereaux, Chief Executive Officer of The Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority (URCA), paid a courtesy call on His Excellency Sidney Collie, Bahamas Ambassador  to the United States and Permanent Representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), on Friday, August 24, 2018, at the Embassy of The Bahamas, 2220 Massachusetts Avenue, N.W.

Mr. Bereaux, who was born in Grand Bahama, graduated high school in Trinidad. He later qualified as a lawyer in the United Kingdom and subsequently spent three years practicing law in Hong Kong before returning to Trinidad and Tobago, where entered the regulations field.

In 2010, Mr. Bereaux joined URCA as a Senior Case Officer. He was promoted to Director of Policy and Regulations in 2012 and then appointed to his current position as CEO in March 2017.

With Information Communication Technology (ICT) now influencing every aspect of national, regional and global development, since 2009, URCA has facilitated significant  growth and expansion in The Bahamas’ ICT Sector.

The Bahamas is currently seeking election to the Council of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a UN specialized agency for information and communication technologies.

Mr. Bereaux noted during his discussion with Ambassador Collie that the Caribbean is not taking full advantage of the ITU and what it has to offer, and with a country from the region around the table, he  believes that more leveraging can be done and more benefits can be derived from the organization.
