FLAGRANT DISREGARD FOR OUR ENVIRONMENT

An abandoned boat in Morgan’s Bluff Harbour, North Andros

GUEST COMMENTARY: BY DR. HARRIS EVANS

NASSAU, Bahamas — Watery Graveyard….One of the things that angers me the most is how there are those who display such a flagrant disregard for our environment. Every bit of trash that is errantly tossed without a care where it lands and accumulates is part of this vexing issue. However, this desecration is happening on a much larger scale.

On a recent trip to North Andros, it broke my heart to see the environmental disaster that is looming unfettered in Morgan’s Bluff Harbour. There are a number of ships, both large and small, which are disintegrating in the once clean clear waters around the dock . There are large, menacingly jagged portions of hulking rusted metal, just below the surface of the waves.

Additionally, the much bigger vessels that once boasted Ro/Ro capabilities and a testament to their gigantic size are lolling and slowly disintegrating and no doubt contributing hazardous materials and contaminating the seabed. Additionally, on the surrounding land, there is a generous amount of deserted large fuel containers, which have seen their better days, having outlived their usefulness.

What troubles me is how the former operators of these ships are allowed to just dump them and foul up our environment, without even a second glance? When has it become okay to make Morgan’s Bluff Harbour a watery graveyard for old ships?

There was a time when the locals were able to enjoy recreational fishing from this dock, but now even that is risky at best. Am I the only one who is concerned about this destruction and desecration of our heritage? Or is it that our authorities are suffering from Selective vision. This malady of choice simply states: “Out of sight- out of mind”…(c) Dr. Harris Evans 12/11/2023 Creative Writers Inc.  All Rights Reserved.
