NASSAU, Bahamas, May 15, 2021 — Today is a very sad day for The Broadcasting fraternity and the family of The Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (aka ZNS), as we learn of the passing of a Broadcast pioneer, Sir Edward Charles Carter, KCMG.
Sir Charles, as he was affectionately called, was born on April 13th, 1943 and grew up in Nassau, Bahamas. His journey in Broadcasting began in 1964 when he joined The Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas as a radio announcer.
He spent many years at ZNS in the promotion of excellence in broadcasting both on Radio and Television. He was instrumental in the introduction of Television in The Bahamas and was the voice of many national radio and television broadcasts including the seminal, “1973 Independence Celebrations Broadcast”, “Focus” and the “Young Bahamian showcase”. While at ZNS, he rose through the ranks from Radio Announcer to General Manager. He was an archivist of the Bahamian story and a true lover and promoter of the history of the Bahamian people and their talents.
Mr. Carter served as Member of Parliament for the constituency of Holy Cross from 1982-1992, he was also Minister of Health and Foreign Affairs. In 1993, he entered the private sector and opened Carter Marketing with his sons Eddie and Mark. In 1999, he was granted a radio license to open and operate the radio station Island FM. He received numerous awards and lifetime achievement honors in Broadcasting and Community Service and was also knighted by the Queen in June, 2016.
On behalf of the Executive Chairman, Board of Directors, Management and Staff of The Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (past and present), we send our sincerest condolences to Lady Muriell Carter and the entire Carterfamily on the passing of a Bahamian broadcast giant.
