WASHINGTON, D.C., October 19, 2023 – Collete Williams on Thursday, October 19, 2023, posted an excellent collection of photos on Facebook that were taken at the Ministry of Youth Speech Competition  in Freeport, Grand Bahama. I absolutely had to share them with readers of my online publication, BAHAMAS CHRONICLE, which has a huge following among Bahamians in the diaspora across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom as well as in The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

Ms. Williams posted the photos with the following narrative:

“About a week ago I did a speech workshop for this talented group of young people and got to witness them compete in the Ministry of Youths annual Speech Competition. They all spoke on the theme, Youth: Excellence is the Standard. Wow! What eloquent speakers they are.

If any of you have doubt about the Bahamas’ future, these youth would let you know it is very bright. I am so proud of this group of you people.

A Job well done by the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture for hosting the National Youth monthly speech competition Very well-done Apostle Kenneth A. Miller and Lady Carla Brown-Roker.”

EDITOR’S NOTE: Personally, I am extremely proud of Carla Brown-Roker, Grand Bahama-based Youth Programs Coordinator with the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, who is my niece.

Carla Brown-Roker is also the mother Samuel R. Brown, who was born and grew up in West End, Grand Bahama, and is currently among the prospective candidates being considered by the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) to be its standard-bearer in the upcoming bye-election for the West End and Bimini seat in the House of Assembly that became vacant in the aftermath of the death of Obie Wilchcombe, the deceased MP for that area.

I have seen all of the PLP aspiring candidates for the West End and Bimini seat on Facebook, and as someone who has been actively involved in Bahamian politics for more than 60 years, Samuel R. Brown is unquestionably the most qualified and appealing candidate among the list of candidates who have officially applied to be the PLP’s candidate.

Hopefully, the Candidates Committee of the PLP will agree with my assessment when it announces its decision after interviewing all of the candidates.
