IT IS TIME FOR THE MP FOR NORTH ANDROS TO SPEAK UP ON THE PROPOSED ANDROS MINING PROJECT

By OSWALD T. BROWN

WASHINGTON, D.C., October 11, 2020 — Here’s a question: Does Mr. Carlton G. Bowleg, MP for North Andros and the Berry Islands, attend meetings of the House of Assembly? If he does, has he made any meaningful contributions in the House of Assembly on behalf of his constituents since he was elected? I follow the House of Assembly closely on the Internet, but I cannot recall Mr. Bowleg making a contribution in the House or, for that matter, read anything in The Tribune or Guardian that he said in the House.

I have just received a copy of a letter written to Prime Minister Dr. Hubert Minnis “RE: Bahamas Material Company Ltd. and Morgan’s Bluff Development Company” requesting approval for a proposed mining project in Andros that I suppose was sent to me because earlier on Saturday, October 10, I published in my online publication BAHAMAS CHRONICLE a “Guest Commentary” by Demi Thompson, owner of Stafford Creek Lodge, that clearly should convince the Prime Minister that he should exercise judicious prudence before giving the go-ahead to this proposed Andros mining project.

As a son of Andros, who spent my boyhood years at Stanyard Creek, I plan to comment more extensively on this matter in the coming weeks because I fully agree with some of the concerns raised by Demi Thompson. It is long past time that Andros, which was the first Out Island to demonstrate political maturity by rejecting the racist United Bahamian Party (UBP) and electing two Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) representatives to the House of Assembly in 1956 – Cyril St. John Stevenson and Clarence A. Bain — no longer is used as a political football in by greedy and avaricious land-grabbing mercenaries.

As I noted, I plan to address this matter in more detail in the weeks ahead. In the meantime, Mr. Carlton G. Bowleg, MP for North Andros and the Berry Islands, let’s hear from you on this very important matter that I am sure has generated a great deal of discussion not only in Andros, but the entire Bahamas.
