OPPOSITIONL LEADER CALLS ON PRIME MINISTER TO ACT ON SCIENTIFIC EVIDENCE IN RESPONSE TO COVID-19

NASSAU, Bahamas — The Hon. Philip “Brave” Davis, leader of the opposition Progressive Liberal Party (PLP), described  the curfew instituted by Prime Minister the  Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, in response to the COVID-19 epidemic, as  an overreach that will have unintended consequences.

Speaking at a press conference at PLP headquarters on Thursday, March 19, 2020, Mr. Davis called on the government to commence widespread testing as a way of determining the number of persons infected by COVID-19 so that the government can act on empirical data and scientific evidence.

Prime Minister the Hon. Dr. Hubert Minnis, earlier on Thursday, announced that  a temporary curfew will be imposed from 9pm to 5am, starting  Friday, March 20. The Prime Minister’s announcement said that there will be exemptions, as approved by the Commissioner of Police. He also said  that trucks, personnel tankers and vehicles working with gas stations and gas facilities will be exempt from the curfew.
