Free National Movement (FNM) Senator Rick Fox, who unsuccessfully ran on the party’s ticket in the Garden Hills constituency, hired an American communications firm, Woodrow Communications, to manage his public relations ahead of the May 12 general election.

According to a registration statement in accordance with the US’ Foreign Agents Registration Act, the company was to aid with international media coordination, with specific tasks to include the drafting and distribution of international media advisories and press releases; the management of international media and interview coordination; conducting press coverage analysis across international markers and providing ongoing international media monitoring.

The document cited hourly rates ranging from $120 to $630.

Fox, who faced off against the Progressive Liberal Party’s (PLP’s) Mario Bowleg, who was the incumbent MP, launched an aggressive campaign ahead of the May 12 vote.

Among other things, he pledged to, if elected, give his MP salary back to the constituency; begin a $10 million investment fund; construct a youth sports center and provide 25 $10,000 small business grants each year.

During his campaign, he and his team also conducted multiple community cleanups and installed solar lights in several locations.

Ahead of the election, his celebrity endorsements included his ex-wife, Vanessa Williams and former NBA colleagues Shaquille O’Neal and Earvin “Magic” Johnson.

However, his efforts were marred by some controversies, including a dispute with the Davis government over a deal involving his construction business, Partana, as well as an argument the day before the advanced poll between Fox and PLP supporters, which was recorded and circulated on social media.

Ultimately, Bowleg won the seat with 2,022 of the 3,859 votes cast, while Fox followed with 1,346 votes and the Coalition of Independents’ Ayesha Cleare got 491 votes.

Fox, however, has pledged his continued commitment to working for The Bahamas.

“I stand ready and willing to work with you to move our country forward,” he said as he congratulated Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis on the election victory.

He was chosen as one of the FNM’s four senators, alongside Arinithia Komolafe, Elsworth Johnson and Dr. Trevor Johnson.
