Our Buzzing Bees and the entire Spelling Bee Delegation Pays Courtesy Call on Ambassador to Washington, D.C.
Bahamian Spellers Caerwyn Turnquest and Felix Wells, along with representatives from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST), paid a Courtesy Call on The Bahamas’ Ambassador to Washington, D.C., His Excellency Ambassador Wendall Jones, while in Washington for the 101st Scripps National Spelling Bee Competition.
Accompanying the spellers were Mrs. Vanessa James Rolle, Coordinator of the Curriculum Enrichment and Enhancement Section (MOEST); Mrs. D’Metria T. Smith, Spelling Bee Coordinator (MOEST); representatives of the Bahamas National Spelling Bee Committee, coaches Anthia Knowles and Beverley Turnquest, parents, and supporters.

During the engaging and inspiring visit, Ambassador Jones emphasized the importance of reading while encouraging the young spellers to develop a deep quest and thirst for knowledge. He shared that reading allows you to have a conversation with anyone at anytime, highlighting how books open doors to learning, understanding, and meaningful engagement.

The Ambassador warmly engaged the “Buzzing Bees” in word games and fun spelling activities while reminiscing about stories from his childhood, recalling how he and his friends often challenged one another with words. Affectionately referring to the students as “Wordsmiths,” he praised their accomplishments and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence.

Ambassador Jones congratulated Caerwyn and Felix, reminding them that they are not only representing The Bahamas but also serving as young diplomats for their country. He encouraged them to take pride in their remarkable achievement and to inspire others through their dedication and perseverance.

He further encouraged the students to always strive to be the very best in whatever they pursue, reminding them that “it is only going up from here.” He also emphasized that they are Global Citizens, capable of making meaningful contributions wherever life takes them.

The Courtesy Call created lasting memories for the delegation and served as an inspiring reminder of the power of words, reading, and lifelong learning.
